The couple has church members and friends who provide transportation and they use para-transit or rely on DRS staff when participating in our Seniors with Vision Loss Program’s outings and events. Through this program, they maintain friendships cultivated in peer support groups and continue socializing at luncheons, recreational events and educational meetings.

Another consumer, a retired military nurse, learned she may be entitled to Veteran’s health care services after attending one of DRS’ support group meetings for people with vision loss.
She applied for and now has VA benefits. She is having total knee replacement surgery using VA benefits and recently had a comprehensive diabetic eye exam with follow-up services. She expressed her thanks by stating, “I had no idea that I could ever qualify for any of these services as a woman who served in Vietnam as a nurse.”
During home visits our staff has discussed Advanced Directives, health care management, volunteer assistance for home maintenance and helped trouble-shoot shopping/cooking challenges. This couple, with a 65 year marriage, remains independent as more moderate services and care are incorporated into their lives.
Once again, I am gratefully in the position to be extending my thanks to YOU!! You have out done yourself again by getting me a housing voucher. This means the world to me. The thought of having my own place without the rent and utilities burying me financially is like a dream coming true! You (case manager) are the right person for the position you fill. It is obvious that what is said about you: caring for and helping others, is very true.

My case manager devoted 15 months of compassionate guidance, counseling & navigation through the arduous, frustrating & eternal social security application process for assistance, provided referrals & contacts, a steady communication, encouragement & support… she always saw a next step, part, possibility, hope…
A couple receives a multitude of activities of daily living assistance from DRS staff to maintain their independence at home. The wife, who is blind, needed and received financial assistance to repair her Scan and Read machine that enables her to manage their finances since her spouse is unable to help due to moderate Alzheimer’s. She also uses large print check registers with color coding to give her the visual cues needed for accounting their expenses.

I am writing to thank you personally for all the time and work you put in to helping me find the funding, locating the curbside wheelchair lift, and having it installed in my pickup. I also want to thank you and all the great people associated with Disabled Resource Services that have generously donated a portion of the funds needed to accomplish this task. Having the lift has made my life a lot easier. Now I am able to load and unload my chair anytime I want or need to by myself and am able to go anywhere that I need to without having to schedule people to load and unload and accompany me.
